Friends Are Funny

You gotta love them, right? I mean YOU PICKED THEM to be in your life, so you kind of HAVE to love them for who they are.

I’m the type of person who will say things like they are. I’m not a bitch about it, but will also not tell you what you want to hear. This has gotten me in some sticky situations, but more often than not, these people will continue to seek my advice (or in the least, confide in me) because they know I won’t just listen to their thoughts and coddle them with rainbows and unicorns.

Sometimes I will just mmmhmmm my way through the conversation without really saying much else because I’ve heard it being expressed far too often (please please please if you’re going to complain about something going on in your life, bitch if you must, but then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT), or because I know that if I say what’s really on my mind, an argument will break loose (learned from past experience).

The funny thing about my friends is that they will complain about stuff people do (like talk about their significant other or their upcoming weddings or anything really to do about their partners). Why do they need to CONSTANTLY talk about their wedding? their engagement? their boyfriend? I’M TIRED OF HEARING IT they will complain to me.

My response is usually that people tend to talk about the things that are going on in their lives or the things they are excited about. It’s not meant to annoy you. If you are saying something to them and they relate to it by sharing a story about themselves, sometimes it’s not meant to direct the conversation back to them. Sometimes they just want to show you they understand and are providing a personal example. Sometimes it really is as simple as that. Usually, people are not that self-centered.

Nonetheless, this bothers her to no end.

HOWEVER. These friends have noooo problem talking about these things in their lives OVER AND OVER AND OVER again or bringing the story back to them when they wants to relate to something I say. And, I don’t want you to think this bothers me because it doesn’t.

It’s just that the VERY THING THEY COMPLAIN ABOUT, they do.

This post isn’t meant to be a rant. I just want to remind myself that sometimes the friends we choose to have in our lives can be really funny (peculiar funny not haha funny) and that since I am, in essence, allowing these people to share their lives with me … I gotta love them in spite of this little quirk.
