I am spending an obscene amount of money at the gym for different services. It's disgusting, really, the amount of money they will wind up taking earning from me.
Sidetrack: Good news is that after one week, I lost 5 pounds. The bad news is that I lost some muscle mass. Which is weird for me to grasp since I did a lot of weight training. Anyways.
I had an appointment with the trainer last night. It was booked for 8pm even though we decided on 7pm. Yeah, I don't know either. Anyways, that was fine. I did a slow walk on the treadmill before hand because I knew she was going to pulverize my body.
So the clock was fast approaching 8pm and she is nowhere to be seen. And she's not hard to miss. So 8pm comes and goes. 8:05. Eight oh eight. 8:12. Okay ... what the fuck is going on? I go to the front desk and say, "I have an appointment, where is my trainer?" So they page her. But I guess getting paged is pretty useless when you're not in the building.
Her cell was called. No answer. Nobody knew where she was. They just kept saying, "She should be here." Turns out this isn't the first time she's done something like this. They said that this has been a problem before and that "some trainers" think their job is a joke. When management are not surprised ... well, that's not a good thing.
So in the blink of an eye I got a new trainer with a new schedule. I won't say the name of my new trainer but when I google it, I come up with this image. And it's a boy trainer too. I hope he doesn't make me do jumping jacks.
So I got in my car and thought to myself, "Hmmm. I wonder if she did leave a message on my cell." Because I suck at checking my messages, I had five that were unheard and the last one was ... yes, it was from her. Fuck. Apparently she had a migraine and a chipped tooth and wanted to cancel and just resume with our regular session on Thursday. The funny thing is I was asked if she contacted me and I said no. Apparently I block out the memory of owning a cell phone from time to time.
I have been feeling badly about it ever since. I even made a mental pros/cons list about it.
Pros: We got along great. She is very knowledgeable. She worked me pretty damn hard.
Cons aka the list to make me feel less bad: She's unreliable (according to management). This hasn't been the first time she hasn't shown. She didn't call the gym to tell them she wouldn't be there (so that they could inform me and none of this would've happened). She didn't take me out of the system so it looked as though we had a session. Who's to say that this won't happen again? I mean, women get periods once a month.
I feel like shit about it. We only had two sessions together and I know that this is a service that I am paying dearly for, but it feels like I just broke up with someone with a text message. I know it's going to be awkward as HELL when I'm there and not working out with her. GAH! Why didn't I just check my cell phone!?!?!
BUT, then maybe my not hearing the message in time was a blessing in disguise? Because I would've been all like, "SURE, no problem!" and then what if it happened again and again?? I need consistency with my trainer ... I'm too inconsistent as it is already on my own.
So, I guess what's done is done. But when I talk to her, do I say that I heard her message too late? Or do I lie and say that I didn't get a message at all? I just don't want her to feel that what was done is out of malice. I need to get on with my program and hit my goal.
And I am going to keep making excuses to make me feel better about this, because I still feel bad damnit!!

I watched The Biggest Loser last night and Bob and Jillian were stressing that the number on the scale is the only thing that matters. They were poo-pooing the whole 'muscle mass' statements, saying that pounds lost is the true reflection of hard work. So, be proud of your five which, in just a week, is absolutely amazing!
Hmmm...I would fess up to not listening to your messages. She messed up but I would not want her to lose her job over this.
The biggest thing for me is being in sync with my trainer...if you two get along and workout well together fess up to not getting her call (or lie and say you for it late and that your phone is a POS) and keep working out with her - after all you lost 5 pounds ( HURRAY!!)in her company!
Here's the thing. People need trainers because they can't do it themselves. An unreliable trainer is the worst kind. So, I say stick with seeking out a new trainer, but maybe let the gym know that your old trainer did indeed try to contact you ... so, you don't feel such guilt if she gets reprimanded.
Well, it would be nice to tell her that you got the message very late, but that you are going to start work with a different trainer.
In the end, it's what makes you happy, right? And five pounds in one week is amazing.
Whether you heard the message or not, you did the right thing by getting a new trainer. I do think you should say something to her if you see her again in the gym and she asks. And I agree with Nilsa - let the gym know that she did contact you, but you didn't get the message on time. Be honest about it.
But you need consistency and like you said, what if it continually happens with her not feeling good?
Working out and reaching a physical goal is hard work and you need all the support you can get and a flaky trainer isn't the way to go about it.
That's all I got to say on the matter.
You need a trainer who is reliable and it doesn't sound like she's that reliable at all! I don't think you should feel bad about it. She should have called her work and let them know to rearrange for you. It's not your job to call in sick for her.
Congrats on the 5lb loss though - that's AWESOME!
PS Is that really what your new trainer looks like? It looks like Ron Jeremy
Did you have the session with Yanni? Did you ask him about his break up with Linda Evans?
Seriously, no sense beating yourself up about it - if you end up getting another session with her she's gonna kick you butt and make you hater her anyway :)
Screw it! Tell her you got the message after the gym and management made the decision to give you a new trainer- plus, working out for Yanni.... who would want to miss THAT?
Oh, your case makes me feel queasy as well.
I would just stick with the truth. It wasn't the first time someone didn't check their messages. Tell her that you were waiting for her to show up, and in her absence, you decided to try out another trainer.
Look at it this way -- it is HER responsibility for the entire round trip. Contacting you and making sure you got the message and weren't waiting. You're paying, aren't you?
I totally do not listen to voicemail either.
I haaaaaaate them.
With those pros, I'd probably go crawling back. I imagine that kind of compatibility in a trainer is hard to find!
Better yet, we need to get you in a damn Cell Phones 101 course. Not that I know anything about leaving you voicemails that seem to fall on deaf ears or anything. I'm half serious about this. I jokingly should offer a cell phone 101 course and post it to YouTube for fun.
I hope you're feeling less bad about this. Maybe Yanni (I love his name and that you Googled him straight up) will be a good fit. I have never been able to use a trainer, but that's just the Taurus in me.
Congrats on the weight loss!
It seems like an honest mistake to me. And with personal training, it's really all about you, so if you want to go back to her after one session with Yanni, ask. If not, don't worry about it.
5 pounds in one week!!!!!
what??!!!
Congrats!!!
It seems like you need someone to stay on you....so being reliable is important.
I would be honest and tell her that you didn't get your messages until after your session. Then, if you like her, tell her to please call the gym next time to ensure that you get the message. On the other hand, if you'd like to continue with Yanni, then tell her that when the mgmnt didn't know where she was, they reassigned you. Just make sure you use "I" statements. Don't piss off a trainer.
